Chapter 34

Nothing Sara could have done or said would have prevented Jean Simpson from realising that asking about their dentist was not good news. Of course, it was not uncommon for the police to send requests around the various practices in the area asking for possible matches. But dentists were busy people, and the replies sometimes took days, even for a murder victim. Sara needed to to short-circuit a general callout and the wait for DNA results. Dr Taylor’s tooth fairy had produced a decent impression of the victim’s teeth, and Sara was on her way to collect them before taking them to the waiting dentist in Wroxham.

She was so preoccupied that she failed to notice when Dante spotted her leaving. He caught up with her before she got to the stairs at the end of the corridor. She was extracting her car keys from her handbag when he tapped her arm.

‘Don’t go,’ he said, pulling her to a halt.

‘I’m on the way to the mortuary,’ she told him. ‘It’s urgent.’

‘I’m sure. Can’t you spare me a minute or two?’

Sara huffed a bit before nodding. ‘Yes, of course.’

‘I have to ask,’ he began. Sara could see that he was angry with her. It made her uncomfortable, and she moved away. ‘What have I done wrong?’

‘What do you mean?’

‘You haven’t been to stay with me for a couple of weeks. Now you won’t answer my messages or calls. Am I really that bad in bed?’ Dante drew a deep breath and glanced around to ensure no one was listening. ‘Look, I don’t want to do this here. Can we have dinner tonight? We need to talk.’

‘I can’t.’ Sara shook her head and spluttered out what she knew were excuses. ‘This case is really difficult. We’re all up to the eyeballs. I’m on my way to try and identify a victim.’

‘I’m just about to knock off. Why don’t I come with you?’

‘There’s no need. I have to go straight home after my visit. Someone is waiting for me.’

Dante folded his arms. ‘What sort of someone?’

‘Please don’t make something out of nothing,’ she rolled her eyes. ‘It’s just a workman. A gardener, to be precise. Gilly arranged for him to tame that wilderness at the back of the cottage.’

‘Gardener? I’m guessing an older chap with a pipe and a trowel,’ said Dante acidly. Sara recoiled at the look on his face. ‘If Gilly knows him.’

Sara longed to tell him to mind his own business. He was bristling with barely controlled irritation. She wasn’t about to admit that the man was young, handsome and ripped. Nor that Dante would have reason to be jealous if he saw the effect that Adie Dickinson was having on Sara.

‘He’s just a workman. Don’t get all uptight about it. I have to go. Dr Taylor is waiting for me.’

‘Uptight!’ spat Dante as she rattled down the stairs. ‘You owe me an explanation.’

She waved her hand without actually agreeing.

I’ve got to deal with this, Sara thought, as she drove to meet the pathologist.
